Family photos are one of the most meaningful parts of a wedding day.

They’re also the part most couples feel unsure about.

If you’ve found yourself wondering what should actually be included in your wedding family photo list, or how long family portraits will take, you’re not alone.

The good news is, with a little planning, this part of the day can feel simple and relaxed.

A family poses in formal attire at a wedding at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado. They are outside among autumn trees . A bride and groom hold colorful flowers. Smiles convey joy.

How Long Do Family Photos Take at a Wedding?

When planned well, family portraits typically take: 25–45 minutes total

The biggest factor is not the number of people, but how organized the groupings are.

A clear family photo list for your wedding keeps things moving and allows you to spend more time with your guests.

The Goal of Family Wedding Photos

My approach to family portraits is simple:

• capture the people who matter most

• keep things efficient

• create space for you to enjoy your day

You don’t need every possible combination.

You just need the right ones.

How to Build Your Wedding Family Photo List

Instead of thinking about individual photos, start by thinking in groupings.

This makes the process much easier and keeps your timeline realistic.

Immediate Family

Start here first.

These are the most important photos.

• Each partner with their parents

• Each partner with siblings

• Couple with each immediate family

• Couple with both families together

This alone covers the core of your wedding family portraits list.

Grandparents

If grandparents are attending, include:

• Each partner with grandparents

• Couple with grandparents

These are often some of the most meaningful images from the day.

Extended Family (Optional)

If it’s important to you:

• Couple with aunts, uncles, cousins

• Larger extended family groupings

Keep in mind, these can add time, so we’ll build them in thoughtfully.

Special Groupings

This is where you personalize your list.

• Close family friends

• Godparents

• Anyone who feels like family

What Most Couples Don’t Realize

You don’t need every combination.

If we photograph:

• you with each parent

• you with your full family

That already tells the story.

Adding too many variations can quickly turn into 45+ minutes of photos.

Most couples prefer to keep this part short so they can get back to their guests.

One Simple Tip That Makes Everything Easier

Choose a helper.

Pick one person from each side of the family who:

• knows the key people

• can help gather them quickly

This keeps things moving without you having to manage it.

When to Finalize Your Family Photo List

I recommend finalizing your wedding family photo list about: 2–3 weeks before the wedding

We’ll review it together and make sure everything flows well with your timeline.

What to Expect on the Wedding Day

You won’t need to organize anything.

I’ll guide the process, keep things moving, and make sure it feels calm and efficient.

This part of the day should feel easy, not stressful.

A Simple Starting Point

If you're not sure where to begin, I created a sample family wedding photo list you can use as a guide:

Use it as a starting point, not a checklist.

Final Thought

You don’t need to get this perfect.

Start with what feels important, and I’ll help shape the rest.
